2022 Call for Papers Opens Today
ASOR invites members to submit paper abstracts and workshop presentations for the virtual (online, Oct. 19-23) and in-person (Boston, Nov. 16-19) components of the 2022 Annual Meeting. Proposals (abstracts) may be submitted now through March 15 via the Call for Papers. Learn about the dual-component program, participation requirements (ASOR Academic Membership and Meeting Registration), and how to submit an abstract here. Our goal is to award a total of $222,000 in fellowships, scholarships, and grants to support ASOR members and ASOR-affiliated projects this year. Read more about the types of funding available here. Please contact Marta Ostovich with any questions.

Job Opening: ANE Today Editor
ASOR is looking for an editor for The Ancient Near East Today, our weekly e-newsletter for non-technical pieces for the general public, but also of interest to students, faculty, and other professionals in related fields. The editor solicits writers, edits contributions, and supervises the production and distribution of the newsletter with the ASOR staff. The ideal candidate for this compensated position will have excellent writing skills and some editorial experience. Review of applications will begin March 14th, but will continue until the position is filled. Read more about this job opening.

FOA Webinar: Sam Wolff & Tel Gezer this Sunday!
Register for our next webinar this Sunday, February 20, at 3:30 pm EST, featuring Sam Wolff's talk on "Excavations at Tel Gezer: A Personal Story." In 1972, a stone vat was discovered in Dr. Sam Wolff’s square in Field VII at Tel Gezer, Israel. He returned to the site as co-director of the Tandy Museum excavations (2006-2017). This webinar will review the results of that project, which took place in the area between the well-known six-chambered Iron Age gate (“Solomon’s Gate”) and that same square that Dr. Wolff excavated in 1972, Field VII. Dr. Wolff will place special emphasis on newly discovered industrial installations, including those related to olive oil production, thus shedding light on important aspects of daily life at Tel Gezer in the Iron Age. Register and pay here. Price is $6 for ASOR members and $12 for non-members. This webinar will be recorded. All proceeds will support membership scholarships and online resources.

Early Career Scholars Social Media Sub-committee
ASOR's Early Career Scholars (ECS) Social Media sub-committee is looking for members. This group represents ASOR members who are not yet tenured, and works to support ECS in their professional development. The Social Media sub-committee works to publicize opportunities that may be of interest to ECS members, including events hosted by the ECS committee, as well as external events, job postings, and grants. This sub-committee is looking for people to help manage and create content for its social media accounts. We welcome all applicants, but are particularly interested in individuals who have experience with graphic design, and familiarity with Instagram and/or Canva.

Summer Stipend Report: Jane Holmstrom
As part of ASOR's 2021 Summer Stipend Program, Jane Holmstrom mapped commemorative inscriptions, fortress sites, and important centers as part of the Vayots Dzor Fortress Landscapes Project in Armenia. Holmstrom used least cost analysis to visualize trade networks to understand how people potentially moved through the landscape in the Urartu empire. Read "Noble Networks?: Visualizing Urartian Expansion into Adjacent Territories Using Least Cost Path" by Jane Holmstrom.
ECS Coffee Hour on Feb. 25
The ECS committee is hosting a Coffee Hour on Friday, February 25th at 1:00pm EST. These Coffee Hours are bi-monthly events that bring together students as well as early career scholars from around the world. Our topic for this coffee hour is proposing and reading a paper at the ASOR Annual Meeting! Click here for the Google Meet link for the coffee hour.
ASOR Committee Opportunities
Looking for a way to get more involved with ASOR? The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee and the Honors & Awards Committee are both looking for new members. The DEI Committee is responsible for advising ASOR on all matters related to DEI. The Honors & Awards Committee determines the awardees for all ASOR awards (book, service, paper, and poster) and advises on new awards.

Academic Geneologies of Near Eastern Scholars (AGNES) Project
This is a request from Rachel Hallote and Eric Cline: Because of our shared interest in the history of archaeology and related disciplines, we are initiating this “Academic Genealogies of Near Eastern Scholars” (AGNES) project. Our goal is to find connections between scholars and mentors stretching back as far as we can, to reveal the interwoven web of our disciplines. Read more . . .
