After relocating to temporary offices in Boston last summer, and after extensive discussions, the ASOR Board has decided that ASOR can best support our program goals by purchasing a facility in the Washington, D.C., area to serve as ASOR’s permanent and independent home. James F. Strange Remembrance by Eric & Carol Meyers
One of ASOR’s most devoted members, who served as Secretary from 1997–2012 and as Trustee for more 20 years, passed away on March 23, 2018. Jim is survived by a family filled with long-time servants of ASOR, including his wife, Carolyn, and children James Riley, Katherine, Joanna, and Mary Elizabeth. Jim’s obituary is posted here. Thank You for Your Support!
March Fellowship Madness at ASOR was (once again) a huge success. At the beginning of the month, we had funds from endowments and designated gifts to support 18 scholarships of $2,000. We set a goal of funding two more fellowships (or raising $4,000). Thanks to the support of our generous donors, we raised more then $6,000 and awarded 21 dig scholarships. FY 2018 Spending Deal Increases Funding for the NEH
On March 21st, Congress released a comprehensive spending deal that includes an increase of $3 million dollars for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for the remainder of FY 2018! After the Trump administration proposed the elimination of the NEH, NEA, and several other humanities programs, the humanities community sent over 160,000 messages to Congress, wrote scores of op-eds, and met with hundreds of Congressional offices. In the end, Congress not only rejected the Trump administration’s proposals at every turn but also increased funding for the NEH! Read more ...
