An Update on Graduate Tuition Stipends in the United States
On November 16, 2017, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a tax bill that included a clause that would make tuition waivers for graduate students subject to income tax. This would significantly increase the tax liability of hundreds of thousands of graduate students—including many ASOR graduate student members. Early Saturday morning on December 2, 2017, the U.S. Senate passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which does not include the clause that taxes graduate student tuition wavers. The next step is reconciliation by a conference committee. Our friends at the National Humanities Alliance are suggesting that ASOR members who are U.S. citizens complete an action alert form that urges the conferees to reject the House provision in the final bill. While ASOR is apolitical and does not take a stand on the larger tax bill, we hope all of our members will consider how we might best support our student members. Thank you for your consideration.
