New Damage in Palmyra Uncovered by ASOR CHI
Read the recent report by ASOR CHI on findings obtained by satellite imagery uncovering new damage to ISIL-occupied UNESCO World Heritage site of Palmyra. The imagery shows significant damage to the Tetrapylon and the Roman Theater, likely the result of of destruction by ISIL. Read more ...

Extended Deadline: 2017 Call for Papers
The deadline to submit paper abstracts to the 2017 ASOR Annual Meeting has been extended to March 1. There is a $25 fee for submissions received after February 15 that will be waived if an abstract has been solicited by a session chair. Please visit the ASOR Annual Meeting website to read the Call for Papers, the participation guidelines, and to see the list of 2017 Sessions and Workshops. ASOR welcomes submissions from all student, early career, and professional members.
 
ASOR Member, Jeremy Rutter Receives Honorary Degree from Uppsala
Archaeologist and ASOR Member Jeremy Rutter, the Sherman Fairchild Professor Emeritus in the Humanities and professor emeritus of classical studies at Dartmouth College, received an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University in Sweden. He received the honor during a conferment ceremony held in a 14th-century cathedral. The degree recognizes Rutter for his contributions to archaeology over his long career and his mentorship of more than two generations of scholars. Read more ...
ASOR Member, Jennifer Gates-Foster, Named Recipient of 2017 UNC Teaching Award
ASOR Member Professor Jennifer Gates-Foster was one of three professors named recipients of 2017 UNC Teaching Awards. Congratulations to Professor Gates-Foster for receiving a Tanner Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. Each year, the UNC University Committee on Teaching Awards chooses recipients who promote the value of undergraduate teaching by example, demonstrate concern for students through interaction and approachability inside and outside the classroom, create meaningful learning experiences, and maintain high expectations of their students. $500 for ASOR Members if Accepted to the Philology Institute
The Philology Institute in Wilmore, KY will offer intensive, six-week summer courses in Latin, ancient Greek, and biblical Hebrew from June to July, 2017. (See website for course-specific dates.) The cost is only $2,500 for the equivalent of two semesters of university-level language instruction, and ASOR members who are accepted will automatically receive a $500 scholarship.
