At the beginning of September, all ASOR members and donors received an Annual Fund Appeal Letter from ASOR President Susan Ackerman and Chair of the ASOR Development Committee Ed Wright. | John S. Holladay - Obituary |
Professor Emeritus John (Jack) Holladay, B.Sc., Th.D., passed away peacefully at Toronto East General Hospital, late on September 23, 2016. After graduating with a Th.D. from Harvard Divinity School, he worked at Princeton University before joining the Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Toronto. He was one of the investigators at Tel Gezer, where he supervised the excavation of the city's Solomonic Gate. Jack loved his time in U of T, one of his main achievements being his landmark dig in the Nile Delta, the Wadi Tumilat Project, in which he was assisted in both field and lab work by his wife, Phyllis. | Research Fellowship Opportunity: 2017-2018 Shohet Scholars Grant Program |
The International Catacomb Society’s Shohet Scholars Program desires to support scholars of demonstrated promise and ability who are judged capable of producing significant, original research in the fields of archeology, art history, classical studies, history, comparative religions, or related subjects. The work need not focus explicitly on the Roman catacombs, but it should be within the sphere of the Mediterranean world from the late Hellenistic Period to the end of the Roman Empire. Scholars of all institutional affiliations and independent scholars may apply for Shohet Scholar funding if they are current individual or institutional members of the ICS at the time of the application submission deadline and in possession of a doctoral degree or the equivalent. The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (S-I-R) Program assists U.S. higher education institutions in expanding programs of academic exchange. For the 2017-18 academic year, the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program offers additional grant opportunities for all U.S. colleges and universities to apply to host scholars or professionals in Cultural Heritage Protection and Preservation from Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya or Iraq.
