| ASOR Annual Meeting Dates and Locations May Need to Shift |
|
As announced previously, ASOR is re-evaluating the locations and dates of future Annual Meetings. Due to the size of AAR/SBL and the overlap with the end of ASOR's meeting, hotel space is often unavailable. So we need to find out what you, the members, consider important for ASOR leadership to consider about future dates and locations of the Annual Meeting. To that end, on Wednesday, November 2, all active members will be receiving a brief survey by email about the Annual Meeting venue and dates. When it arrives, please take a few minutes and fill it out. It will not be your only opportunity for input, but it will be the foundation of the re-evaluation process. The Annual Meeting is an important part of your ASOR membership. Your voice will help guide its future. |

| La Sierra University: Archaeology Discovery Weekend |
The eighth annual Archaeology Discovery Weekend at La Sierra University will feature "Women in Archaeology," women as part of the archaeological record and as specialists uncovering that record. Archaeology Discovery Weekend is an annual event in mid-November that typically runs from Saturday afternoon and evening and Sunday afternoon. Events include lectures by world-class scholars on a common theme, a Middle Eastern or Mediterranean banquet, a Kids' Dig, hands-on lab activities, and a genuine Bedouin hospitality tent set up for refreshments. To read more about the event taking place November 12-13, click here.

I was a graduate student and delivering my first conference paper at the ASOR Annual Meeting, held that year in New Orleans. My paper was on the pottery and phasing of the Early Bronze Age strata at Tall al-‘Umayri in Jordan. Read more... |

| Remembrance for John S. Holladay, Written by J. Gerald Janzen |
Jack was one of eight of us who entered a doctoral program at Harvard in the early 1960's, under the direction of Ernest Wright and Frank Cross. The Fall Seminar met on Thursdays from 3 to 5. In the first session, Frank gave an overview of the literary sources for our knowledge of the "Near Eastern Languages and Literatures" (the Department in those days being known as NELL), and immediately we all were intimidated. The following week Ernest gave a similar presentation, I suspect (my brain had not sufficiently recovered from the previous week for me to remember clearly), on the material grounds. Read more...
