ASOR and AIA Play Important Role in Passage of Cultural Heritage Law
On Monday, May 9, 2016, President Obama signed into law H.R. 1493, the "Protect and Preserve International Cultural Property Act," which directs the President to exercise his authority to impose import restrictions with respect to any archeological or ethnological material of Syria. ASOR has been actively advocating for the passage of this legislation for more than a year, and we are particularly grateful for the work of ASOR member Dr. Patty Gerstenblith of the DePaul University College of Law, who prepared numerous briefs for our members and the National Humanities Alliance organization of which ASOR is a proud member. ASOR CHI Special Report: Update from Palmyra
DigitalGlobe satellite imagery shows the construction of a military base within the protected zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site by Allison Cuneo, Susan Penacho, Michael Danti, Marina Gabriel

On May 2, 2016 the Palmyra Coordination Committee reported that a Russian military base was being constructed at Palmyra, with multiple media reports indicating that the compound was next to the archaeological area to serve as the base of operations for the mine-clearing operations at the ancient site. Read the report now...

ASOR Member Jesse Casana Awarded ACLS Grant
ASOR member Jesse Casana, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Dartmouth College, has been awarded an ACLS Digital Extension Grant for 2016-17, to support his project "The CORONA Atlas Project: Expanding Access to Historic Satellite Imagery on Global Scale.” The ACLS Digital Extension Grant program supports digitally based research projects in all disciplines of the humanities and humanities-related social sciences, in the hope of advancing the digital transformation of humanities scholarship.
