ASOR 2016 Call for Papers Deadline: February 15
ASOR is currently accepting abstracts for the 2016 Annual Meeting to be held November 16-19 at La Cantera Hill Country Resort, San Antonio, Texas. Please visit the ASOR Annual Meeting website to read the Call for Papers and guidelines for submitting an abstract, as well as the 2016 List of Sessions and Workshops. Remembrance: Trude Dothan
ASOR is saddened to report that long-time ASOR member Trude Dothan, Professor Emerita at the Hebrew University, passed away in Jerusalem on January 28, 2016, after a long illness. Trude is most remembered for her ground-breaking publications on Philistine culture, The Philistines and Their Material Culture (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1982), and People of the Sea: Search for the Philistines (New York: Macmillan; Toronto: Maxwell Macmillan Canada, 1992). The latter was co-authored with her late husband and fellow archaeologist Moshe Dothan. Read more...
Remembrance (Written by Jeffrey A. Blakely): Kevin G. O'Connell, S.J.
A remembrance written by Jeffrey Blakely, with contributions by Susan Ackerman. ASOR is saddened to report that Father Kevin G. O'Connell, S.J., an ASOR Honorary Trustee, died on January 21, 2016, at the Campion Health Center, a Jesuit facility in Weston, Mass. He was 77 years old. Kevin first joined the ASOR Board as an Associate Trustee in 1976, and he remained an Associate Trustee until 1982. Kevin then served as Trustee from 1984-1996. During that time, from 1986-1989, he served as Assistant Secretary to the Board of Trustees, and in 1994-1996, he served as Vice-Chair of the Board. Read more...
Remembrance (Written by Mark S. Smith): Kevin G. O'Connell, S.J.
A remembrance written by Mark Smith. Kevin O'Connell, S.J., and I met at Harvard Divinity School in January, 1979. In his Hebrew Rapid Reading course, we tackled Exodus (he was an expert on this biblical book). A demanding teacher, Kevin was unfailingly patient in explaining Hebrew and no less generous with his time. Kevin was also a natural at saying Mass and serving people. On Sundays I would attend the Mass that he provided at Weston School of Theology. It would be a small group of about 15 people, and Kevin delighted in everyone. Read more...
