| Help Make Digs Safer and Take the Survey Today |
|
Stories about romantic escapades and happy relationships that began on archaeological excavations are legend, as anyone who has worked on a dig can surely attest. But as we also know, excavation lore contains stories of other kinds of “relationships” as well. This Survey on Field Safety: Middle East, North Africa, and Mediterranean Basin is designed to understand the ways in which archaeological fieldwork does – or does not – provide a safe and secure setting for all participants. | ASOR Seeks Your Input on the "Ethics Policy" |
|
In 2010, Timothy Harrison, then ASOR President, saw the need for a single, comprehensive document that would provide clear guidelines, consistent with ASOR’s Mission and Strategic Plan, to all those involved in furthering ASOR’s mission. To accomplish this goal, President Harrison created an ad hoc Ethics Working Group that was charged with seeking input in order to prepare a draft holistic professional conduct policy for ASOR. This process has continued with robust support from current ASOR President Susan Ackerman. Please send all comments and suggestions by October 1st. Read more... |

Dear ASOR Member: Our organization is on the lookout for “new blood” on the board! Please email them to the nominations committee chair, Larry Geraty: lgeraty@lasierra.edu or mail them to me at 16658 Rocky Creek Road, Riverside, CA 92503. | New Publication: Cyprus and the Balance of Empires (ARS 20) |
ASOR has put out its latest Archaeological Report Series publication: Cyprus and the Balance of Empires: Art and Archaeology from Justinian I to the Coeur de Lion edited by Charles Anthony Stewart, Thomas W. Davis and Annemarie Weyl Carr. The themes covered in this volume developed from a conference held in Nicosia, organized by the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute [CAARI] celebrating the 50th year anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus. An international group of experts explored several themes such as: the impact of recent archaeological discoveries; the shift from studying Late Antique urbanism to rural development; indicators of Cypriot identity; shifts in population settlement, production, and trade; cultural interaction between Islam and Christianity; the significance of ceramic and numismatic evidence; monumental figural arts and their iconographical interpretation.
