| ASOR Has 1,702,000 Reasons to Celebrate! |
|
A little over three years ago, on July 1, 2011, ASOR launched an ambitious (some might say audacious) “Building a Foundation for ASOR Campaign.” Our goal? To raise $1,000,000 for projects like program endowment, research and training support, and online digital media resources – and, at the same time, to continue to bring in $100,000 every year in annual fund donations. We gave ourselves three years – through June 30, 2014 – to raise the $1.3 million.
Today, we are thrilled to report that – however ambitious the plan we set forward in 2011 – we surpassed our goal by an extraordinary $402,000, to raise a total of $1,702,000!!! Moreover, in every year of the campaign, we raised more than the year before, and in every year, as the “Increase in ASOR Donors” chart makes clear, more donors gave. Read more...

At the 2013 ASOR Annual Meeting, we gathered to celebrate the career of Sy Gitin. Sy became director of the Albright Institute in 1980, and is retiring after an amazing 34 years of service. Sy’s ‘Roast and Toast’ was organized by Lydie Shufro, hosted by Dr. Mark Smith, and funded by private contributions. Attendees filled the room to capacity, and ranged from ASOR members, to 2013 Albright Trustees and Fellows, to colleagues and friends who wished to honor Sy. View now... |

| New Publication: Cyprus and the Balance of Empires (ARS 20) |
ASOR has put out its latest Archaeological Report Series publication: Cyprus and the Balance of Empires: Art and Archaeology from Justinian I to the Coeur de Lion edited by Charles Anthony Stewart, Thomas W. Davis and Annemarie Weyl Carr. The themes covered in this volume developed from a conference held in Nicosia, organized by the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute [CAARI] celebrating the 50th year anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus. An international group of experts explored several themes such as: the impact of recent archaeological discoveries; the shift from studying Late Antique urbanism to rural development; indicators of Cypriot identity; shifts in population settlement, production, and trade; cultural interaction between Islam and Christianity; the significance of ceramic and numismatic evidence; monumental figural arts and their iconographical interpretation. | The FIRST Act and What it Means for Archaeology and ASOR's Members |
|
The Frontiers in Innovation, Research, Science, and Technology (FIRST) Act, a bill written by Congressman Lamar Smith (R – Tx), seeks to significantly reduce the budget of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) funding for social, behavioral, and economic sciences - which includes archaeology, particularly research conducted abroad. This comprises the primary federal support for archaeology, archaeometry, anthropology, and related fields. Many ASOR members and affiliated projects rely on this funding for part of their work, and the elimination of the funding would drastically change our ability to understand the past in the Middle East.
