Big News from the Overseas Research Centers!
May has been a month full of events for ASOR’s affiliated overseas research centers: the W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research (AIAR), in Jerusalem, the American Center of Oriental Research (ACOR), in Amman, and the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute (CAARI), in Nicosia. At the Albright, a gala Shwarmafest was held on May 23, to celebrate the upcoming retirement of the Albright’s director of thirty-four long and glorious years, Seymour (Sy) Gitin. About 100 people, representing all parts of the Jerusalem academic community, attended. Read more...

The FIRST Act and What it Means for Archaeology and ASOR's Members
The Frontiers in Innovation, Research, Science, and Technology (FIRST) Act, a bill written by Congressman Lamar Smith (R – Tx), seeks to significantly reduce the budget of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) funding for social, behavioral, and economic sciences - which includes archaeology, particularly research conducted abroad. This comprises the primary federal support for archaeology, archaeometry, anthropology, and related fields. Many ASOR members and affiliated projects rely on this funding for part of their work, and the elimination of the funding would drastically change our ability to understand the past in the Middle East. Executive Committee & Board of Trustees Meeting Report by ASOR President
From May 2-3, the ASOR Executive Committee and Board of Trustees met, as they do every spring, to engage in discussions and undertake items of business that have come forward since the Executive Committee’s and Board’s gatherings at the November Annual Meeting. The major item on the agenda for these spring meetings is always the budget, both a review of the budget for the current fiscal year, which will come to an end on June 30, and approving the budget for the upcoming fiscal year, which starts on July 1. Christopher A. Tuttle Named Next CAORC Executive Director
The Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Christopher A. Tuttle as its next Executive Director, effective July 2014. Christopher Tuttle has been the Associate Director of the American Center of Oriental Research (ACOR) in Jordan for the past eight years, as well as the Director of ACOR’s preservation programs in the World Heritage site of Petra in southern Jordan. In his work at Petra, he has played an important role in developing and implementing innovative models of cultural heritage preservation that promote economic sustainability both through tourism and through employment and training opportunities for the local communities.

Society of Architectural Historians 2015 Annual Conference in Chicago
The Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) will hold its 68th Annual Conference on April 15-19, 2015, in Chicago, Illinois (#SAH2015). The conference includes 35 paper sessions, Graduate Student Lightning Talks, the SAH Chicago Seminar, tours, and events celebrating the Society's 75th anniversary. The Call for Papers deadline is June 6. The Graduate Student Lightning Talks Call for Submissions opens June 1. SAH International Travel Grants are available for scholars from countries traditionally underrepresented at the Annual Conference to attend the 2015 conference. $2,500 Travel Prizes for Papers to Be Presented at ASOR/SBL
If you're presenting a paper at this year's Annual Meeting in San Diego, there may be a way to make your trip a little cheaper! The Biblical Archaeology Society is offering two prizes of $2,500 each (one awarded to a young scholar and another to an emeritus scholar) for travel expenses to present an academic paper at the 2014 Annual Meeting of ASOR or the 2014 Annual Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL). Applications should be submitted to the Biblical Archaeology Society. Read more...

ASOR Office Summer Hours Begin This Friday!
Starting the week of June 2nd, the ASOR office in Boston will work longer hours Monday-Thursday and close at 12:30 pm on Fridays. This schedule, known as "Summer Hours," will continue through the end of August.
