An Update on March Fellowship Madness
Every year, ASOR awards Excavation Fellowships to deserving students who want to go on a dig. We ask our ASOR members and friends to join the madness and help us send more students into the field. With the amount of money we have raised so far, we will be able to fund three additional fellowships. Introducing the ASOR Junior Scholars Committee
You might be wondering “Who is a Junior Scholar?” Well, unless you are a tenured faculty member, then you are a Junior Scholar! A second question might be what is “new” about this group? While the Junior Scholars committee is one of ASOR’s newest standing committees, the group was started in 2004 to organize events at the Annual Meeting for students and early career professionals. Since that time, Junior Scholars has hosted over 10 Annual Meeting luncheons on a variety of topics, such as overseas institutes, post-docs, and publications.

Archaeologists Uncover Evidence of Bronze Age Panini Maker
Archaeologists in Jordan made a discovery that could change the way we look at the history of pressed sandwiches. An ancient sandwich press uncovered at Tel Halloumi dates to the Early Bronze Age. The press was fashioned from sheets of hammered copper with a mitred hinge. Excavation foreman, Dr. George of the University of Havarti, says, “We believe this cooking tool could have been used over an open flame, or in a clay oven. The high level of wear on the items suggests heavy use, indicating that hot-pressed sandwiches may have been a staple food of the settlement.” Read more...

2014 Sean W. Dever Memorial Prize
The William F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem is pleased to announce the winner of the thirteenth annual competition for the Sean W. Dever Memorial Prize. This award offers $650 for the best published article or paper presented at a conference by a Ph.D. candidate in Syro-Palestinian or Biblical Archaeology. Authors may be of any nationality but the article or paper must be in English. The winner this year is Josephine A. Verduci, a Ph.D. candidate in the Classics and Archaeology Department in the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies at the University of Melbourne. Read more...
