Learn More about ASOR!

Welcome from ASOR's New President, Susan Ackerman
About two weeks ago, on January 1, 2014, I began my tenure as ASOR’s new president. I am extremely honored to have been asked to serve ASOR in this capacity, and I am grateful to the Officers’ Nominating Committee, to the Board of Trustees, and to all of you for placing your confidence in me and for offering me your support. I also feel extremely fortunate, as I come to the ASOR presidency at what is surely one of the great moments in our organization’s history. 100 Donors Needed in 2nd Half of January to Qualify for a Major Legacy Gift

As ASOR moves into the final 5+ months of our Building a Foundation for ASOR Campaign, we are pleased to report that we are close to qualifying for a major legacy gift. An anonymous ASOR trustee has pledged to make a legacy gift that has a current market value of $475,000 and has given ASOR two challenges (300 donors and $200,000 by January 31st). As of January 15, we have received gifts from 200 separate donors, so we need 100 more people to make a gift of $25 or more to meet this challenge. We also need to raise $12,500 in the next two weeks to meet this challenge. Any gift of $25 or more made to ASOR for any cause counts, so please help us qualify.  Read more...

Challenge Gift Establishes the James F. & Carolyn M. Strange Endowed Scholarship Fund
ASOR is pleased to announce a challenge gift of $25,000, which (if the challenge is met) will establish the James F. and Carolyn M. Strange Endowed Scholarship Fund that will provide scholarships for students to participate in excavation projects. As many of you know, securing funding for research and training support, including student field research and the travel fellowship program, was one of the three goals we established at the beginning of our Building a Foundation for ASOR Campaign. If you make a gift to honor Jim and Carolyn by January 31st, your contribution will count for both the Strange Scholarship Challenge and the Legacy Gift Challenge (see the above paragraph). Read more...
How ASOR is Helping to Protect Egyptian Antiquities
The Washington Post recently published an opinion piece by Mohammed Ibrahim, Egypt’s minister of antiquities, under the headline, “Egypt’s stolen heritage.” In it, Mr. Ibrahim connects Egypt’s archaeological heritage to two centuries of tourism, stating that tourism is “the lifeblood of Egypt’s economy and touches the lives of most Egyptians.” He decries thieves who “are taking advantage of Egypt’s security situation to loot our nation’s economic future and steal from our children.” (Article by Peter Herdrich) Read more...
10 Career Tips for ASOR Members (with a video)
ASOR’s membership spans across many fields of study. We’re fortunate to have historians, geologists, archaeologists, and so many more among our ranks. Every year, we come together to discuss discoveries in the field and our research at the ASOR Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting is not only a place to present scholarly work, but also a place for networking and catching up with old friends – or making new ones. It’s a place where student members and other junior scholars can present papers and posters, all while receiving feedback from seasoned professionals. This got us thinking about what words of wisdom some of our more experienced members would have for our newer members. Read more...
