March Fellowship Madness 2021- Supporting DEI
Every March, ASOR runs a targeted campaign called "March Fellowship Madness" to help fund fellowships, scholarships, and grants for summer fieldwork and projects. This March we are focusing our efforts on raising $20,000 for BIPOC scholarships. We have received $8,945 thus far, so we need $11,055 more to reach our goal. We ask that you join ASOR in making lasting change happen. Read more . . .

Libyan Update from the VAM: Authentic Orchestrations
Thanks to the U.S. Embassy Libya External Office (LEO), ten of ASOR's colleagues from Libya were able to take part in ASOR's Virtual Annual Meeting. Reem Furjani of SCENE presented the paper "Authentic Orchestrations and Orchestrating Authenticity." Furjani's paper looks at the changing use of space and the creation of heritage during the restoration of the Arch of Marcus Aurelius in Tripoli. Click here to view the paper.

Meet the New BASOR Editors
In 2020, ASOR announced the appointment of the new editors of The Bulletin of ASOR (BASOR)—a team of four scholars from the United States and Europe. All four team members have since started their term in January 2021, working on the May 2021 issue. This team of four brings extensive editorial experience and diverse academic backgrounds that reflect the diversity of ASOR’s membership and mandate. Read more . . .

Next Thursday: Jane D. Evans & Alexandra Ratzlaff Reveal the Mysteries of Mithras
Register for our next webinar on March 11 at 7:00pm EST, featuring Dr. Jane DeRose Evans and Dr. Alexandra Ratzlaff and "The Mysteries of Mithras in Caesarea: Exploring the Cult’s Rites and Remains." Inside a vault dating to the Roman period in ancient Caesarea Maritima, the 1974 excavation team discovered the remains of a Mithraeum, or a place of worship for the mystery cult of Mithras. Join Dr. Evans and Dr. Ratzlaff as they discuss what we know about how the initiates formed the Mithraeum, and what we can uncover about the cult’s secret rites from the frescos painted on the vault walls and the objects left behind after its abandonment. Register and pay here. Price is $5 for ASOR members and $10 for non-members. All proceeds will support membership scholarships and online resources.

What is a Dual Component ASOR Annual Meeting?
The pandemic has introduced us to terms like hybrid meetings, digital events, F2F, webinars, and the list goes on, but what does a dual component meeting look like? ASOR’s 2021 Annual Meeting will have both in-person (Chicago, Nov. 17-20) and virtual (Online, Dec. 9-12) components. Many sessions and workshops will be hosted as part of both components, and presenters may decide to share their work in-person, online, or both. One registration fee covers participation in both components. Learn more about the key features of this year's dual component meeting here.

"How the Bible Became a Book" with Bill Schniedewind on March 21
Register for our upcoming webinar on March 21 at 7:30pm EDT, featuring Prof. Bill Schniedewind and "How the Bible Became a Book." An expert in ancient biblical interpretation, the social history of the ancient eastern Mediterranean world, and sociolinguistics of Classical Hebrew, Dr. Schniedewind will address some fundamental questions: How did the Bible become a book? And why did these texts become scripture? This lecture explores answers about the origins of the biblical literary traditions from an anthropological perspective beginning with the epigraphic and archaeological evidence. Register and pay here. Price is $5 for ASOR members and $10 for non-members. All proceeds will support membership scholarships and online resources.

Annual Meeting Call for Papers Open Until March 15
ASOR invites paper and workshop presentation proposals for the in-person (Chicago, Nov. 17-20) and virtual (online, Dec. 9-12) components of the 2021 Annual Meeting. Proposals (abstracts) may be submitted now through March 15, per the Call for Papers. There are separate submission forms for each component. Those wishing to present the same paper in-person and online (counting as 1 appearance) need to fill out submission forms for both components for consideration. Not all Member-Organized Sessions and Workshops will be offered for both components. ASOR Academic Membership and Annual Meeting Registration are required for presenting authors when an abstract is submitted. Registration rates include attendance for both components. Please contact Arlene Press if you have any questions. To learn more about sessions and the rules for participation, click here.
