| ASOR's Statement on Recent Events at Palmyra and a Special Update from ASOR's Cultural Heritage Initiative |
ASOR members are deeply troubled by the recent news from Palmyra. Most crucially, we are horrified by the brutal murder of our colleague Khaled al-Asaad, who has earned our and the world’s utmost respect for his role in the protection of Palmyra’s antiquities. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, his friends, and to the community of scholars in Syria who are carrying on his work.
We are repelled as well by ISIL’s bombing of some of ancient Palmyra’s architectural gems: the majestic Temple of Bel and the Temple of Baal-Shamim. ISIL militants have also destroyed Tadmor's ancient Mar Elian monastery and many historic and modern Islamic tombs around Tadmor. These monuments are treasured parts of the cultural heritage of Syria’s people, and attacks upon them tear at the very heart of Syrian identity. They are treasured parts of the world’s cultural heritage as well, and so Syria’s loss is a grave loss for us all. That these losses follow upon so many other devastating losses of cultural heritage landmarks in Syria, and in northern Iraq, makes the calamities taking place in Palmyra even harder to bear.
In order that ASOR members have the most up-to-date information about the destruction taking place at Palmyra, we would like to share a special report prepared by the Cultural Heritage Initiative team on the current situation. Read the report...
For more information on Palmyra, read ASOR CHI's Special Report on the Importance of Palmyra, posted on June 2, 2015.

In your email please include the nights needed and your room preference (king or double). Important: If you need to cancel an existing reservation at InterContinental, please email Arlene Press instead of going through the hotel—that way another ASOR member can use your room rather than it going back to the hotel. |

| Syrian Heritage Initiative Weekly Report 51-52 |
During the reporting period, cultural heritage incidents in Syria and Iraq remained at lower levels relative to previous months. The Syrian Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums reported damage occurring on July 26 to the German Expedition Headquarters at the site of Tell Chuera in Raqqa Province. According to a later edited version of the web post, damage was allegedly caused by a coalition airstrike against ISIL militants. Independent sources and additional data are required to corroborate this claim. Read more...
