| Report on the Destruction of the Northwest Palace at Nimrud |
A video released by ISIL on April 11, 2015, provided vivid and shocking documentation of the deliberate destruction of relief sculpture and standing architecture at the famous archaeological site of Nimrud, located in northern Iraq near the city of Mosul. This report by the ASOR Syrian Heritage Initiative provides a brief introduction to the site of Nimrud and summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding the destruction of the Northwest Palace. The American Schools of Oriental Research is pleased to announce that 65 titles are now openly available through the partnership with Google and HathiTrust. The HathiTrust Digital Library is a digital preservation repository and highly functional access platform. It provides long-term preservation and access services for public domain and in copyright content from a variety of sources, including Google, the Internet Archive, Microsoft, and in-house partner institution initiatives. | SAA Dissertation Award Presented to Alan Farahani |
Dr. Alan Farahani has won the 2015 Society for American Archaeology Dissertation Award for his 2014 dissertation, “Sustaining Community under Empire: An Archaeological Investigation of Long-Term Agricultural Production and Imperial Interventions at Dhiban, Jordan, 1000 BCE - 1450 CE.” Alan received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley’s Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology Program and is currently a post-doctoral scholar at the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at the University of California, Los Angles.
