TerraWatchers - Record Damage to Archaeological Sites in Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq
TerraWatchers.org is a web site that allows you to record observations and findings on different "missions." Steven Savage is taking the next step in a project to document the extent of the damage caused by military activity and looting on sites in Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq, which all of the results will be made available to ASOR's Syrian Heritage Initiative. Anybody can look at the images and seed points, but only registered users can log in and record observations (though anybody can register, simply by filling out a small form with their name and email address, and a password). Read Steven's article in Slate, "Satellite Images Don’t Lie: What it’s like to be an archaeologist watching ISIS and other groups destroy important sites in the Middle East," for more information.
A Message from our Friends at SAA
Last week, our friends at SAA (Society for American Archaeology) reached out to their members regarding an important piece of legislation. In spite of strong opposition from nearly every scientific organization and research university in the country, the House passed a National Science Foundation reauthorization bill (H.R. 1806) that would make a drastic 45% cut to the NSF's research funding for the social sciences. The legislation was adopted by a vote of 217-205. Find out how you can take action and contact your representatives. Read more...

Deadline for submissions is September 15, 2015. Read more...
What's in Your Dig Bag?

We wanted to know what gear they love and what items might be unique to them. Follow the link to see new posts from Mark Schuler, Yorke Rowan, and Samantha Lindgren. Read more...
