The 2014 ASOR Annual Meeting was held in sunny San Diego this year. It was a nice break for the staff from the encroaching cold weather in Boston. The meeting had many great events and presentations, and this year we were lucky enough to have Jason Ur give the Plenary Address. His talk, “The Renaissance of Archaeology in Iraq and its Kurdistan Region,” was both gripping and informative. We hope you’ll watch and enjoy the video of his talk. | ASOR Welcomes Tate Paulette, Project Manager for Cultural Heritage Initiatives |
|
Tate Paulette joined the full-time staff at the beginning of December as Project Manager for ASOR Cultural Heritage Initiatives. He will be managing and providing logistical and research support for ASOR’s Syrian Heritage Initiative. His email address is asorhert@bu.edu.Tate is a Mesopotamian archaeologist. He has just completed a doctoral dissertation about grain storage practices in Early Bronze Age (3000–2000 BC) Mesopotamia in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. His work revolves around the themes of risk, power, and inequality, with a particular focus on agricultural practices, gastro-politics, and human-environment dynamics. He also has an MA in Archaeology from the University of Edinburgh and an MA in Near Eastern Art and Archaeology from the University of Chicago. Read more... |

| Remembrance: Sharon Zuckerman, Co-Director of the Tel Hazor Excavations |

Dr. Sharon Zuckerman, co-director of the Tel Hazor excavations and a senior lecturer at the Institute of Archaeology of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, passed away on November 28, 2014, at the age of 49. Born and raised in Jerusalem, Dr. Sharon Zuckerman began her studies at the Institute of Archaeology of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1987 and completed her B.A. and her M.A. magna cum laude. In 2003, she completed her Ph.D. summa cum laude, under the supervision of Prof. Amnon Ben-Tor, with a dissertation titled “The Kingdom of Hazor in the Late Bronze Age: Chronological and Regional Aspects of the Material Culture of Hazor and Its Settlements”. In 2004–2005 she held a post-doctoral position in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University, working with Prof. Lawrence E. Stager. She stood out as an innovative and original researcher, knowledgeable and thorough in her work. In 1990 she received her first appointment at the Institute of Archaeology of the Hebrew University as a research assistant, and over the years she was promoted to lecturer, and eventually, in 2010, as senior lecturer of biblical archaeology, a position she held until her death. | 2015 Annual Meeting Call for Member-Organized Sessions and Workshop Sessions |
|
ASOR members may propose Member-Organized Sessions around a specific theme, or Workshop Sessions that minimize formal presentation in favor of open discussion. Sessions and workshops may be approved for up to 3 years and can accommodate presenters invited by the session chair as well as papers submitted by ASOR members (with the approval of the session chair). Deadline for session and workshop proposals is December 15, 2014. Read more... |

| New Individual and Institutional Trustees Elected at ASOR Members' Meeting |
ASOR members voted for new institutional and individual trustees at the Members' Meeting during the recent Annual Meeting in San Diego. The elected institutional trustees are Carol Meyers, representing Duke University, and Joseph Greene, representing Harvard University. The elected individual trustees are Rami Arav, University of Nebraska Omaha, and Theodore Burgh, University of North Carolina Wilmington. Read more...
