| Latest Draft of the Proposed Guidelines for Professional Conduct |
|
Since 2011, the Ethics Working Group has worked to formulate a comprehensive professional conduct policy for ASOR. An extensive process of consultation has included two open invitations for feedback from the ASOR membership as well as conversations with committees, constituent groups, and many individual members. An ethics session drew many participants at the 2013 Annual Meeting, and a dedicated, open discussion session was well-attended at the 2014 Annual Meeting in San Diego. The conversation has been robust and healthy, and the Working Group has incorporated all of this input in order to develop this final draft. The ASOR Board of Trustees will vote on this draft at its Spring meeting on April 18, 2015, and the draft is being shared with the ASOR membership several months in advance of that vote. | Storming the Ivory Tower - Article in the Washington Post |
|
All manner of treasure accumulates in the Ivory Tower, but too often that’s where valuable scholarship stays locked up, obscure and inaccessible. “Free the knowledge!” might be the rallying cry behind a creative new plan from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The federal agency, which bills itself as one of the largest funders of humanities programs in the country — recently announced the Public Scholar program. Its goal is to motivate scholars to publish nonfiction books for general readers — rather than for each other. Read more... |

| New Publication: Pyla-Koutsopetria I: Archaeological Survey of an Ancient Coastal Town |
ASOR has put out its latest Archaeological Report Series publication: Pyla-Koutsopetria I: Archaeological Survey of an Ancient Coastal Town by William Caraher, R. Scott Moore and David K. Pettegrew, with contributions by Maria Andrioti, P. Nick Kardulias, Dimitri Nakassis and Brandon Olson. Pyla-Koutsopetria I presents the results of an intensive pedestrian survey documenting the diachronic history of a 100 ha microregion along the southern coast of Cyprus. Located around 10 km from the ancient city of Kition, the ancient coastal settlements of the Koutsopetria mircoregion featured an Iron Age sanctuary, a Classical settlement, a Hellenistic fortification, a Late Roman town, and a Venetian-Ottoman coastal battery situated adjacent to a now infilled, natural harbor on Larnaka Bay.
